Get to know Sveta Sadykova!
Where you are from and where do you currently live and work? Has this effected your work?
I'm from Russia, but two years ago I moved to Indonesia to Bali island. I feel that the move has influenced my creativity, here I can look at animals and plants and be a lot of time in nature, so living on the island energizes me and I often find inspiration for my work in the world around me.
What inspired you to be an illustrator?
A few years ago when I was a graphic designer, my friend gave me a beautiful book illustrated by Benjamin Lacombe. After that I started collecting illustrated books and then I thought about trying my hand at illustration.
How long have you been working as an illustrator?
I used to draw commercial illustrations for projects when I worked as a graphic designer, but in the pandemic I had a lot of free time, so I took an illustration course and soon after a children's book author wrote to me and I took my first commission. That was almost four years ago.
How would you describe your illustration style?
I love using bright colours, brush textures, emotional poses and drawing fun characters and stories, I like to make people smile.
Who/What have been your key influences as an illustrator?
My love for reading and nature, also art, I love going to exhibitions, I have always liked art styles such as impressionism and naive for their emotionality and ease of perception.
What type of projects, clients or illustration markets would you like to work in?
I'm interested in many topics and enjoy working with both fiction and educational literature.
I especially like to illustrate funny stories about anthropomorphic animals, I'd love to illustrate a story about insect life or something like that.
I'm also inspired by stories that help children with their problems, for example, about emotional intelligence or a story about helping a child to adapt to a new country.
What do you like doing when you are not illustrating?
When I'm not illustrating I like to read detective stories and fiction, go on trips and spend time in nature. Also I like to walk with my dog Manu, do yoga and play tennis.
