Jan Smith was born in Nottingham. She also went to school and studied art there. After travelling and working for 6 months in France, Spain and Morocco she studied illustration for a year at Harrow College, and from there moved to live and work at various jobs in London and Somerset. Jan moved back to Nottingham and worked as a sign writer and then as a junior Graphic designer at the Local Evening Post newspaper, where she started to do editorial cartoons and illustrations. In 1987 she decided to go freelance and started with greeting card designs. She did her first book illustration with Ladybird books (Hickory Dickory and Humpty Dumpty) and Orchard books (Frank N Stein books, Tree House Trio and The Pirate Queen) She has also worked with Parragon, Brimax, Pinwheel and many more. Jan has also done projects with USA companies Albert Whitman (Apple Countdown and Pumpkin Countdown) and Publications International plc (Busy books Noah's Ark and Animals). She is now working with Beehive. Jan lives in Nottingham with her son Oscar and her two cats.
